SAVOY (FRANCE) – Organized by the Chancellery in the Royal Abbey of Altacomba, the Holy Mass of Suffrage to commemorate King Umberto II and Queen Maria José was celebrated on 17 March. It is definitely one of the most significant and participated events on the calendar for the Royal House of Savoy and its delegations. In fact, 35 years have passed since S.M. King Umberto II, 18 March 1983, expired at the Cantonal Hospital of Geneva with the word “Italy” on his lips.
The Sacred Rite was celebrated by the Archbishop of Chambery, Moriana and Tarantasia Mons. Philippe Ballot who, in the presence of their Illustrious T.R.H. Prince Vittorio Emanuele, Princess Consort, Marina of Savoy, Prince Emanuele of Savoy and H.E. the Grand Chancellor Cav. Supr. Ord. SS. Ann. Johannes Theo Niederhauser.
The ceremony, carefully endorsed by the Ceremonial Office and in particular of Gr. Off. Avv. Gualtiero Ventura, has seen a large participation of Authorities, Dames and Knights, Guards of Honor, monarchist faithful belonging to various associations and sympathizers. There was also a nucleus of the Carabinieri militar forces in historical uniform.
The Archbishop’s homily focused on the themes of conversion and penance typical of Lent, with a gaze turned to the joy of the Resurrection, exhorting the need to open hearts.
The Mayor of St. Pierre De Curtille was also present at the Mass along with various associations of veteran fighters and chivalry including the National Federation of the Institute of the Blue Ribbon between Fighters and Decorated to Military Valor and the National Institute for the Guard of Honor to the Royal Tombs of the Pantheon.
There were also various associations of monarchical and cultural matrix including the Savoia Group, Italia Reale, Compagnon de Savoie, Académie de Savoie, Académie de Florimontane and Amies du Vieux Chambery.
When the Mass was over, those present were able to remain in the Grange Batelière at the foot of the Abbey where the salute to T.R.H. was delighted by the songs of the Corale Arquatese, a much appreciated idea offered kindly by the Vicarage of Pavia of the Dynastic Orders of the Royal House of Savoy.
Thanks to the Savoy Delegation, the intense event ended with a buffet; a convivial moment enabling all present to taste the region’s specialities. In fact the banquet was organised by the “Cave Lambert “ wine cellar; a company truly observant of Savoy history and that was able to return to producing, making them highly esteemed and topical, several wines present in the tradition of the Court of House Savoy.
This celebration was a highly participative moment with people feeling close to the Royal House of Savoy and saw the Dynastic Orders of the Royal House of Savoy devolve, as a sign of thanks to the Community of the “Chemin Neuf” of Altacomba, a donation to sustain expenses to repair the roof.
