ROME – Two hectic days in the capital and two sacred places in Italy: the Altare della Patria and the Pantheon in Rome. H.R.H. Emanuele Filiberto of Savoy, Prince of Piedmont and Venice, arrived to the Capital on Saturday, January 20th 2018, commissioned by H.R.R. Prince Vittorio Emanuele and following the invitation of the National Institute for the Guard of Honour to the Royal Tombs of the Pantheon, to which many of the Dynastic Orders of the House of Savoy belong and whose 140th anniversary was celebrated.
In the same afternoon, the august Prince wanted to anticipate the moment of the meeting with the Guards of Honor, going to the “Sala Capranichetta” of Piazza Monte Citorio where the General Council of the Institute was gathered. H.R.H. Prince Emanuele Filiberto was greeted by vibrant acclamations and a long ovation. Welcomed by the National President Cav. Gr. Cr. Vsl. Capt. Dr. Ugo d’Atri and the Cav. Gr. Cr. Dr. Stefano Di Martino, Gr. Off. Dr. Adv. Francesco Maria Atanasio, Delegate for Sicily of the Dynastic Orders of the House of Savoy and by Cav. Off. Dr. Adv. Alfonso Marini Dettina, Delegate for Rome and the region of Lazio of the Dynastic Orders, H.R.H. addressed words of appreciation and encouragement to the present social offices.
In the evening, at a well-known hotel in the center, a gala dinner was held, during which H.R.H. gave a much appreciated speech, saying among other things:
« It was 1878 when a committee of veterans of the Risorgimento wars, at the death of the Father of the Country Vittorio Emanuele II, constituted themselves as « Honor guard » at his tomb. And from that year on, the tradition was established of burying the kings and queens of Italy at the Pantheon, consecrated to the religion of Christ and the history of Italy. All of us were surprised by what happened in December, with the sudden return of the Auguste Salme of King Vittorio Emanuele III and Queen Elena. Ironically, I was in Bucharest for the funeral of King Michael of Romania and I could see with my own eyes how a State worthy of the name pays tribute to a deceased Sovereign, exiled from His land for many years… As a Family, and quite certain to interpret the sentiment of many Italians, we expressed our thanks to President Mattarella and to the institutions that made this act possible, but we reiterated with absolute firmness that the only eternal residence for the Kings and the Queens of Italy remains within these walls: the Pantheon of Rome! This has always been King Umberto II’s view, my grandfather, and both my father and myself have a duty to keep these provisions of the sovereign, trusting, just as he did, that history too will one day give a fairer and more balanced judgment on the figure of King Vittorio Emanuele III. I am here among you to reiterate all this. « .
On Sunday morning, January 21st 2018, H.R.H. Prince Emanuele Filiberto attended the ceremony at the Altare della Patria where he laid a laurel wreath onto the Unknown Soldier monument along with the high offices of the Institute, and then went to the Pantheon in Rome, preceded by the sound of a fanfare of the Bersaglieri National Corp.
After marching before the deployment of the Guard, H.R.H. has entered the Basilica, where the Rector of the Pantheon, Comm. Mons. Daniele Micheletti, celebrated the Holy Mass in homage of the Sovereigns of Italy and the late Guards of Honor.
Leaving the Pantheon at the sound of the « Royal March », the august Prince received sincere applauses and demonstrations of affection from the many citizens and tourists in the square, as reported by several newspapers. For more information please see the links below:
