1 MAY 2024 – PAVIA, BASILICA OF SAN PIETRO IN CIEL D’ORO – HOLY MASS FOR THE REPOSE OF THE SOULS OF TT.MM. UMBERTO II AND MARIA JOSÈ

On the morning of 1 May, the traditional Holy Mass for the repose of the souls of TT.MM. King Umberto II and Queen Maria Josè was held in Pavia.

Welcomed by the Augustinian Fathers in the splendid setting of the Basilica of San Pietro in Ciel d’oro, where St. Augustine, Bishop and Doctor of the Church, rests, the members of the Savoy Knightly Forces celebrated the liturgical feast of St. Joseph and honoured the memory of the King and Queen. On this occasion the Prior also visited the Vicariate of Pavia.

In his homily, Monsignor Prior spoke of fatherhood and work, drawing inspiration from the examples of St Joseph and St Augustine, and emphasising the importance of evangelical charity, the most fundamental quality of a Christian knight.

After the Holy Mass, before the members went to the tomb of Saint Augustine of Hippo for a special prayer as part of the recently concluded Augustinian Jubilee, the Delegate gave a short speech focusing on the legacy of King Umberto II, both during his short Reign and his subsequent exile. Despite the challenges, King Umberto II maintained a strong bond with His beloved homeland, especially through His interactions with visiting Italians.

The Religious Ceremony was followed by a convivial gathering attended by around 60 guests. The proceeds of the event were donated to the charitable activities of the Augustinian Community of Pavia.
