TO CELEBRATE THE 150TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE WEDDING OF TRH KING AND QUEEN UMBERTO AND MARGHERITA OF SAVOY, A CONVENTION AND HISTORICAL BALL WERE HELD IN FLORENCE’S POGGIO IMPERIALE TO RE-ENACT THE HAPPY EVENT. PROCEEDS FROM THE BALL, SPONSOIRED BY THE DYNASTIC ORDERS OF THE ROYAL HOUSE OF SAVOY, WERE DEVOLVED ENTIRELY TO CHARITY.

FLORENCE – 150 years ago, in 1868, in the short period when Florence was the Capital of the Kingdom of Italy, the wedding of TRH the King and Queen Umberto and Margherita of Savoy was celebrated in the city. For this anniversary, the Tuscan delegation of the Dynastic orders of the Royal House of Savoy together with the Council of the Senators of the Realm sponsored the event organised by the Tuscan Region and other Regional Entities to celebrate the occasion. The event, consisting in a historical convention followed by a Grand commemorative Ball, was very successful with both the public and the media.

The convention, centred round social and cultural aspects characterising the Florence Capital period, enabled the public to relive the pomp of those days when the city was transformed to welcome the Couple, also in view of the wedding.

Thanks to the organising Committees’, the Grand Ball managed to commemorate the event that really took place with the participation of professional actors and a 19th century school of dance. The players impersonated HM King Umberto I and HM Queen Margherita wearing historical clothes, transforming the Villa Medicea of the Poggio Imperiale into a typical scene from the period. An orchestra playing rigorously live accompanied dances in costume, making the music an essential part of the setting.

During the ball, the Convention speakers received a commemorative medal, reproducing the one made in 1868

Ball guests included personalities such as Gina Lollobrigida and the singer Filippo Neviani, in art Nek. The considerable proceeds from the evening were all devolved to Onlus Voa Voa of Florence, Association sustaining families affected by rare diseases with no cure
