22.05.2021 NOTO – THE GRAND CROSS OF THE ORDER OF MERIT OF SAVOY IS AWARDED TO THE PRIOR FOR SICILY AND BISHOP OF NOTO

THE HOMAGE TO BLESSED MARIA CRISTINA OF SAVOY

On Saturday 22 May 2021 H.E. the Bishop of Noto, Mgr. Antonio Staglianò, Prior for Sicily of the Dynastic Orders of the Royal House of Savoy, received the Regional Delegate Gr. Uff. Avv. Francesco Maria Atanasio who, together with the Deputy for Syracuse, Comm. Avv. Giorgio Nicastro del Lago and Comm. Giuseppe Troia, ceremonial officer at the Diocese of Noto, handed him the diploma of Knight of the Grand Cross of the Order of Merit of Savoy, which had been awarded to him by H.R.H. the Prince Grand Master in 2020.

This was followed by a floral tribute to the altar dedicated to Blessed Maria Cristina of Savoy, which is located inside the cathedral and was consecrated on 14 May 2016 by the Bishop in the presence of H.R.H. the Prince of Piedmont and Venice, Emanuele Filiberto of Savoy. The Dames and Knights present gathered for a moment of prayer which was presided over by the Vicar General of the Diocese of Noto, the Most Rev. Mgr. Angelo Giurdanella, Officer of the Order of Saints Maurice and Lazarus, who imparted the blessing with the relic of the Reginella Santa kindly lent by Cav. Uff. Ivan Grancagnolo.

Finally, the Vicariate for Syracuse, together with the provincial delegation of the National Institute of the Guard of Honour to the Royal Tombs of the Pantheon and the provincial federation of the Institute of the Blue Ribbon for Combatants and Holders of Decorations for Military Valour, sponsored the celebration of the “Day of the Holder of Decorations”, which was customarily held on 24 May. Mgr. Angelo Giurdanella officiated at the Holy Mass in memory of the war dead in the presence of representatives of the Armed Forces and of the Italian Red Cross at the church of Ecce Homo al Pantheon, which houses the tombs of numerous heroes from Noto who were decorated for Military Valour during the First World War and the memorial plaque of Gold Medal holders Francesco Maiore and Luigi Adorno, who fought and died during the Second World War.
