LITURGICAL SERVICE IN MALTA FOR THE REPOSE OF THE SOUL OF H.R.H. PRINCE VITTORIO EMANUELE

Lija (Malta), 17 April 2024

The Maltese Delegation of the Dynastic Orders of the Royal House of Savoy held a liturgical service in the village of Lija on 17 April for the repose of the soul of H.R.H. Vittorio Emanuele, Duke of Savoy and Prince of Naples, who recently passed away.

The Mass was celebrated in the Church of Our Lady of Miracles by the Prior of the Delegation, Rev. Canon Gerald John Micallef.

The service was attended by a large number of members and supporters who had gathered in memory of the August Prince.

The event provided an opportunity for the Delegate, Comm. H.E. Amb. Prof. George A. Said-Zammit, to update the members and applicants on the latest activities and projects for 2024, in anticipation of the organisation of a charity gala on the occasion of the forthcoming visit to Malta of the Grand Master, H.R.H. Prince Emanuele Filiberto.

Lija became one of the parishes of Malta in 1594. The chapel was built in 1664-66 to replace an existing structure. On 20 February 1743, a painting of the Virgin and Child was seen shedding tears, and the following day Malta was hit by a strong earthquake, but no buildings collapsed and no one was killed. Since then the chapel has been a constant destination for pilgrims and the faithful.
