Geneva, 17 March 2021
On 17 March 1861, with Law No. 4761 (later transformed into Law No. 1 of 21 April 1861), the new Italian Parliament assembled in Turin and solemnly proclaimed the birth of the Kingdom of Italy
Following the unanimous vote of Parliament, H.M. King Vittorio Emanuele II assumed for himself and his descendants the title of “King of Italy, by the grace of God and the will of the Nation”. Within a few weeks, the Kingdom of Italy was recognised by the main international governments.
H.M. King Vittorio Emanuele thus became the “Father of the Fatherland”, bringing to completion under his sceptre the dream of the Risorgimento, which was crowned in 1918 with the liberation of Trento and Trieste.
Italy was finally made: one country from the Alps to Sicily, under the Tricolour with the White Cross of Savoy.
