New York – The Savoy Foundation’s Chivalry Awards, assigned by the American Foundation of Savoy Orders and initiated in 2013, are awards dedicated to honouring and celebrating the successes of illustrious people who are active in the philanthropy and social areas. They are honoured for their conduct, which reveals the highest ideals of “chivalry”, a term that still conveys the ideas of courtesy, honour and integrity.
This award recognises selfless commitment towards the needy and sheds a modern light on the ancient traditions of charity and generosity, which have been key concepts for the Dynastic Orders of the Royal House of Savoy for centuries.
The Chivalry Award 2018 was assigned to Matilda Raffa Cuomo for her exceptional work in the fields of education and mentoring which she has done with permanent dedication. She began her mentoring project in the state of New York and then expanded to serve the entire United States and other countries, such as Italy and Spain in Europe and Morocco. Today, it is a consolidated activity managed by the non-profit organisation Mentoring USA.
Mentoring is a process in which a caring adult influences the life of a young person, thus helping increase self-esteem, reinforce relationships with peers and adults, improve academic performance and attendance, and also combat the school drop-out.
Matilda Raffa Cuomo, the widow of the ex-governor of the state of New York, the Hon. Mario Cuomo, and mother of the current governor of New York, Andrew Cuomo, has for decades been a beloved and inspiring symbol of true chivalry in America. The Chivalry Award 2018 acknowledges her life’s work with admiration.
