On the impulse of H.R.H. Prince Emanuele Filiberto di Savoia, President of the Grand Magistral Council, the Dynastic Orders of the Royal House of Savoy have been supporting the activities of Peter Pan Odv through A.I.C.O.D.S. for about three years. The Rome-based facility hosts young patients of the Bambino Gesù Hospital and their families, supporting the rental of three rooms.

This facility welcomes families from all over the world, but the latest terrible events in Ukraine require greater attention to those who flee this tormented land, often in extremely difficult situations, in search of medical care for their children.

A Ukrainian family arrived at the home of Peter Pan Odv only a few days ago and another is on its way: they will be hosted in rooms made available thanks to the contribution of the Dynastic Orders of the Royal House of Savoy.

Here are the stories of the first refugees.

Denys, 8 years old, and Mariana, his mother, arrived on Sunday 6th March, still terrified and with anguish in their hearts for their relatives who remained in Ukraine. Denys has spent almost all of his eight years in hospital recovering from leukaemia. He has had three relapses in Ukraine and his eyesight is impaired by the heavy doses of chemotherapy. About a year and a half ago, he arrived in Italy at the Bambino Gesù Hospital where he underwent a bone marrow transplant, with success. In December last year, he returned to Ukraine. At the beginning of April, he was to return to Rome accompanied by his mother to undergo the planned check-ups at the Bambino Gesù Hospital. But the war broke out and they were forced to bring forward their departure, leaving Ukraine on the first day of the bombings. They found shelter with a family in Poland who were able to take them in for a few days. Their mother was desperate because she had no money to pay for accommodation and food. How could they get to Italy? Her request for help reached FIAGOP, the Italian network of Associations of Parents and Healed Pediatric Oncohaematology Patients, which immediately informed the federated association Peter Pan Odv.

“There are so many children who have found themselves, despite themselves, in the middle of a war that in an instant is capable of putting an end to their dreams, their hopes, their right to a future: Peter Pan’s big heart could not remain indifferent to what is happening. We have started up our solidarity machine and are ready to provide welcome, psychological support and all the necessary support to the children with cancer and their families who are arriving in Italy fleeing such an atrocious conflict” – says Roberto Mainiero, president of Peter Pan.

In addition to offering its availability to welcome refugees to the institutions and organisations involved in humanitarian corridors, the association has organised a collection of basic necessities at its headquarters for the collection point in the parish of Santa Sofia in Rome.

Peter Pan Odv does everything to “add life to the days of children and young people” who are fighting cancer by giving them back the rights denied to them by the disease.

We thank all of you who contribute to ensuring that this charity can continue to provide help to those in need.

We need everyone’s help to continue to give our support.
