THE GRAND MAGISTRAL PRIOR OPENS THE JUBILEE YEAR IN ROME FOR THE 450TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE ORDER OF SAINTS MAURITIUS AND LAZARUS.

On 12 February 2022 in Rome, in the monumental Sala del Pio Sodalizio dei Piceni of the Complesso di San Salvatore in Lauro, on the opening day of the Mauritian Jubilee and the birthday of TT.RR.HH. the Princes of Naples, the Lazio Delegation of the Dynastic Orders of the Royal House of Savoy welcomed the new Knights and Dames.

The event was attended by H.E. the Most Reverend Mgr. Paolo De Nicolò, Grand Magistral Prior of the Dynastic Orders of the Royal House of Savoy, by high officials of the Dynastic Orders, including His Serene Highness Cav. Gr. Cr. Gr. Cr. Prince Don Alessandro Jacopo Boncompagni Ludovisi Altemps, President of the Committee of the Dynastic Orders, Cav. Gr. Cr. Co. Avv. Gr. Cr. Co. Avv. Antonio d’Amelio, Vice President of the Council of Dynastic Orders, Cav. di Gr. Cr. Alberto Bochicchio and Gr. Uff. Avv. Gualtiero Ventura, respectively Grand Master of Ceremonies, member of the Council and Vice Grand Master of Ceremonies, member of the Committee of the Dynastic Orders of the Royal House of Savoy.

On this happy occasion, the Delegate for Lazio, Comm. Avv. Alfonso Marini Dettina, announced the appointment of the Rev. Mgr. Pietro Bongiovanni as Prior of Lazio and, recalling how much he had dedicated himself to the faithful during the darkest phase of the pandemic, gave him a stole embroidered with the Cross of the Order of Saints Maurice and Lazarus as a token of good wishes for his new mission. The Rev. Prior expressed his thanks and illustrated the works of the Parish of San Salvatore in Lauro, which were carried out also with the help of the Dynastic Orders of the Royal House of Savoy.

The new Knights and Dames, with their church robes wrapped around one arm, then made their knightly promises of obedient and charitable commitment and H.E. the Most Reverend Mgr. Paolo De Nicolò, with the assistance of the Rev. Prior of Lazio, imparted his blessing to the assembly, which included amongst its illustrious guests H.E. the Most Reverend Abraham Desta, Bishop of Meki (Ethiopia), Silvana Alesiani, National President of the Convegni di Cultura Beata Maria Cristina di Savoia, Cav. Gr. Cr. Capt. di Vasc. Dr. Ugo d’Atri, President of the National Institute for the Guard of Honour to the Royal Tombs of the Pantheon, Dr. Elvira Gentile, President of the non-profit organisation “Taking up from here”.  

The Eucharistic rite was concelebrated by H.E. the Most Reverend Grand Magistral Prior and the Rev. Prior of Lazio, while H.E. the Most Reverend Bishop of Meki, accompanied by Rev. Thomas Wodeselassie, diocesan priest of Tigray, and by Rev. Giorgio Lenzi assisted them. The celebration was accompanied by a group of choristers from the Choir of the Diocese of Rome.

In his homily, the Grand Prior recalled the centuries-old history of the Orders of Saints Maurice and Lazarus, which the Holy See reunited in 1572 and entrusted to the Grand Magistry of Savoy. Addressing the Mauritian Knights, he said: “The purple-red robe you are wearing is a church robe, because our actions are for God”.
